Ptosis Surgery (adult)

This page will provide you with information about ptosis surgery. For further details, you should speak to your consultant.

What is ptosis surgery?

As we age, it is common for the edge of the upper eyelid to start sagging, which can significantly limit the opening of the eye. This is known as ptosis; and surgery aims to correct this by raising the levator muscle in the eyelid to enable you to see better.

What are the benefits to ptosis surgery?

By improving the position of the eyelid you can expect your vision to improve. This surgery can also help you achieve a more youthful, radiant appearance by correcting the drooping eyelid and restoring a balance of your facial features.

What are the alternatives?

It is possible that your consultant may offer you ptosis props, which fit inside your glasses and keep the eyelids raised. However, this is only a temporary solution and patients often find props very uncomfortable to wear. The only way to permanently treat ptosis is by undergoing surgery.

What does the procedure involve?

To improve the position of the eyelid, your doctor will need to strengthen where the levator muscle attaches to your eyelid. They will do this by making a small cut in the natural crease of your eyelid, where they will position stitches in the muscle. The majority of procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic. Procedures often take between 45 minutes and 90 minutes, and will depend on whether you are having one or both eyelids operated on.

Are there any potential complications with this surgery?

Most surgical procedures carry some level of risk or possible complication. These will be discussed with you by your consultant or pre-assessment nurse prior to your procedure.

How long will it take for me to recover?

Providing there is no complications with your procedure you should be able to return home after a few hours. During the recovery process you must not:

  • Do strenuous exercise (until stitches are removed)
  • Get your eyelid damp (until stitches are removed)
  • Bend down (until stitches are removed)
  • Wear eye make-up
  • Drink alcohol
  • Expose your face and eyes to too much sunlight

Speak to your consultant about how regular exercise can help improve your overall health and help you to recover quicker.

Summary

Ptosis surgery aims to improve vision and the look of your eyes by correcting sagginess of the eyelid/eyelids. Although your face will continue to age, the surgery will make you appear more youthful than you would if you did not undergo surgery. As with all surgical procedures, you should take time to consider each option and be realistic about the outcome.
