Men’s Health

I think I might have….prostate symptoms.

The prostate gland sits just beneath the bladder and is usually the size of a chestnut, with the urethra (water pipe) running through the middle. As you get older, your prostate will gradually increase in size. It’s never the wrong time to get yourself checked out by a medical professional.

A few examples of prostatic symptoms are;

  • Urinating more frequently than normal.
  • Having difficulty starting to urinate or on the other hand needing to rush to the toilet.
  • Noticing the appearance of blood in your urine.
  • Feeling that your bladder has not emptied completely.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should visit your GP or a Consultant Urologist here at The Chelmsford, Essex.

Did you know:

  • 50% of men will experience benign enlargement of the prostate by the age of 65 and 90% of men have prostatic enlargement at the age of 90. Please be made aware that an enlarged prostate alone does not always cause symptoms.
  • Not all urinary symptoms are due to an enlarged prostate, pain or blood in the urine and incontinence could be due to another condition.
  • 1 in 3 men will suffer prostatic symptoms in their life.
  • 1 in 10 men will require surgical treatment for their symptoms.
  • 30-40% of men with prostatic symptoms do not experience worsening of their condition with time and may not require any treatment.

Following initial blood tests and examinations, either by your GP or Urologist, you may also be referred for diagnostic imaging of the prostate (MRI/Ultrasound). Depending on the outcome, a Template-guided biopsy of the prostate may be required to gain samples of the prostate for analysis. This procedure and all initial investigations can be completed at The Chelmsford, Essex.

To see our Consultant Urologists here at The Chelmsford, you can be referred from your GP or you can self-refer to book a consultation if you are self-funding for your treatment.
