Entropion and Ectropion Repair

This page will provide you with information about entropion and ectropion repair. For further details, you should speak to your consultant.

What are entropion and ectropion?

Entropion – This is a condition where the eyelid turns towards the eye, causing the eyelashes to brush up against the cornea.

Ectropion – Ectropion is where the tissue on the eyelid sags, forcing it to turn outwards (see figure 1).

These conditions typically only affect the bottom eyelid, and are most common among elderly people. However, tight skin and scar tissue can also force the eyelid out of position, resulting in ectropion.

Entropion and ectropion repairs are carried out to put the eyelid back in its original position, and you should notice your symptoms improving as a result.

Are there any alternatives to surgery?

Possible alternatives include:

  • Ointment and artificial tears for protection of the eye’s surface
  • Specially-designed, soft contact lenses
  • Tape to prevent lashes from rubbing against the eye (entropion)
  • Injecting Botox into the muscle (entropion)
  • Using stitches to prevent the lid from turning inwards

What happens during surgery?

A typical procedure takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, and the duration will depend on whether both of your eyes are being operated on. Most patients are administered local anaesthetic for surgery. The surgical repair may involve your doctor removing a minor piece of the eyelid in the area where the tissue has become the most slack. If your condition has formed as a result of scar tissue or taught skin then your surgeon may have to use a skin graft.

Are there any potential complications with this surgery?

Most surgical procedures carry some level of risk or possible complication. These will be discussed with you by your consultant or pre-assessment nurse prior to your procedure.

How quick can I expect to recover?

You will be able to leave hospital within a few hours of the operation. Until your stitches have been removed, try not to get the eyelid damp, bend down or carry out any rigorous exercise. In the few weeks following your procedure, it is advised that you do not wear eye make-up. Try to keep your face and eyes out of the sun as much as possible. In general, making sure you exercise regularly can help improve your overall health and wellbeing. Seek advice from your consultant before exercising. Most patients are happy with the results of their surgery as they are often long-lasting. However, it should be remembered that the condition may return as a result of aging and the skin loosening over time.

Summary

Entropion and ectropion repairs are procedures carried out to correct the position of the eyelid and should improve symptoms.
