Ultrasound

An ultrasound scan is a painless test that uses sound waves to create images of organs and structures inside your body. It is a very commonly used test and can be used in several different clinical specialities.

At The Chelmsford, Ultrasound is used in the following areas:
• Abdomen including aortic aneurysm
• Carotid Doppler
• Fetal viability (not able to date a pregnancy)
• Gynaecological scans including transvaginal
• Pelvis (transabdominal and transrectal)
• Orthopaedic and sports injury scans
• Testicular scans
• Thyroid

What does an ultrasound scan involve?

Some gel is placed on the area of skin which is going to be scanned. This jelly helps the ultrasound probe make good contact with your body. The probe is then placed on the jelly and the ultrasound waves are monitored and
recorded by a machine attached to the probe. In certain instances, it may be necessary to use an internal probe to gain more detail; for example scans of the ovaries or prostate.
When you attend your ultrasound scan the procedure will be explained fully. The whole procedure is completely pain free and has no known side effects or risks.
