This page will provide you with information about cataract surgery. For further details, you should speak to your consultant.
A cataract is a common ailment whereby the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, often resulting in blurred or defocused vision (see figure 1). Cataracts are most common among the elderly and can be treated with surgery, which aims to enhance the patient’s vision.

Cataract surgery is the only permanent solution to restoring your eyesight, although new glasses may help alleviate some of the symptoms.
Using ultrasound, your consultant will break the cataract up into small fragments before removing it from the eye through a small incision. An artificial lens will then be implanted into your eye, in the same pouch that held the natural lens. A typical procedure takes around 20 minutes and is usually performed under local anaesthetic.
Most surgical procedures carry some level of risk or possible complication. These will be discussed with you by your consultant or pre-assessment nurse prior to your procedure.
Patients are able to return home the same day as their operation. It is advised that you book an appointment with your optician, as the operation will most likely mean that you require a new pair of glasses. Regular exercise is important for long-term health, but you should seek advice from a health professional beforehand.
Cataract surgery is a common procedure carried out to improve a patient’s vision by removing the cataract and replacing it with an artificial lens.
