How our team approach to pain management has helped Lesley

Lesley Condron from Maldon has suffered from back and neck pain since her early 20’s and admits to having a very complex history of pain problems. Over the last few weeks, she has benefitted from the Chelmsford Medical Centre’s specialist team approach to pain management and is keen for others to find out about this unique service available in the heart of Essex.

Just over four years ago, Lesley was recommended to seek a second opinion for her back problems. Over the previous years, she had been treated by a variety of osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists, none of whom had managed to ease her pain levels significantly. A friend advised booking an appointment with Mr John Sutcliffe, a renowned Harley Street neuro spinal surgeon, who duly carried out the relevant diagnostic scans and after thorough investigation, recommended surgery. Following the operation, she saw a specialist physiotherapist near Gatwick, travelling hundreds of miles each month to her sessions.

Shortly after the surgery, Lesley was involved in a car accident which undid all the good work. Four years on and Lesley has finally found what she believes to be the ideal combination of treatments under one roof at Chelmsford Medical Centre in New London Road.

Lesley explained: “I was delighted when I found out that my surgeon, Mr Sutcliffe, now works out of Chelmsford Medical Centre and he put me in touch with Julie Wright, a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist at the centre. She talked to Mr Sutcliffe and they jointly agreed that I should be scanned to ensure there were no serious spinal problems before I started physiotherapy. Luckily, there weren’t so I began a course of physio. During one of my sessions, I was talking to Julie about my pain levels and she asked if I would consider seeing Mr James Roast, a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist who consults at the centre too. Well, I never knew that something as simple as talking could help me deal with my pain!”

The receptionists arranged an appointment within an hour for Lesley to see Mr Roast and after this first meeting, she knew she had found someone who could help her. “Mr Roast has helped me understand how my behaviour affects my pain levels. I had begun having panic attacks but having talked it through with him, I am now able to control my mental approach to the pain and realise how relaxation plays such an important role in pain relief. I am now combining physiotherapy with CBT sessions and am feeling so much more positive. Mr Roast has made me feel good about myself and now I am starting to beat the pain mentally as well as physically.”

Lesley takes great comfort from the fact that Mr Sutcliffe is also receiving updates on her condition via Julie and Mr Roast and that she feels she is reaping the benefits from their teamwork. She also appreciates having access to a range of specialist consultants and diagnostic facilities all under one roof.

“The Chelmsford Medical Centre team have been wonderful. Whenever I walk in the centre, I am warmly greeted by the lovely nurses and receptionists as well as my specialist consultants. I am so grateful to have this quality of service so near to home” Lesley said.
