Training & background:

Mr Rees qualified as a doctor in 1994 from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. Prior to this he undertook an intercalated BSc(Hons) degree in ‘Biological & Clinical Science’ in 1992 at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. After House Officer positions at the Royal Free and Hemel Hempstead Hospitals, Mr Rees obtained full registration with the GMC in 1995.

As a Senior House Officer in Surgery, Mr Rees worked at the Hammersmith Hospital, the Royal Brompton Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, all prestigious teaching hospitals in London, as part of his basic surgical training. In 1998 he passed the FRCS examinations before commencing his Specialist Registrar training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Middlesex.

In 2004 Mr Rees was awarded a highly competitive ‘Knee Fellowship’ by BASK in Derby and Nottingham. It was during this year that Mr Rees consolidated his experience and expertise in reconstructive knee surgery including day case arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, complex revision knee replacement and computer-assisted knee surgery.

At the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, one of the busiest trauma centres in the UK, Mr Rees was responsible for treating large numbers of patients with complex and challenging musculoskeletal injury.

In 2005 Mr Rees passed the FRCS(Tr & Orth) examination, was awarded his ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training’ in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and was granted Specialist Recognition by the GMC. In 2006 Mr Rees was appointed Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery at Broomfield Hospital. Mr Rees is currently the BOA Linkman for Broomfield Hospital.

Mr Rees is one of the few RCS-recognized Educational Supervisors at Broomfield Hospital and is heavily involved in training junior surgeons. He has several published papers to his name and is currently involved in research examining patient’s expectations and outcomes following total knee replacement.

Mr Rees is also involved in collaborative work with the Mechanical Engineering Research Group at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford. He teaches on ‘Surgical Skills’ courses run by the Royal College of Surgeons and lectures on knee surgery courses at RNOH, Stanmore.
